Why We Listen To Populists: Episode 1 Enoch Powell

By Matthew Clark

Throughout the Globe, yet particularly in Western nations, contemporary voters are increasingly casting their ballots for populist leaders. Donald Trump in the United States, Nigel Farage in the United Kingdom, Marine Le Pen of France, Geert Wilders of the Netherlands, Alice Weideel of Germany, etc., all are politicians who have gained traction with the voting public by attacking the Neo-Liberal Globalist Political Establishment. Concentrated wealth, open borders allowing for mass immigration, counter productive trade treaties, etc., are publicly roasted by populist politicians who hope to undo the damage inflicted on their nations by being elected to positions of political authority.

Amidst this heated political conflict it would assist in understanding the appeal these rebels enjoy among a significant sector of the citizenry by looking to the past, namely to do a quick study on a few individuals who aided modern populism by combating the globalist order when it was not fashionable to do so.

John Enoch Powell was born on June 16, 1912 in Birmingham, England. He attended Trinity College and by the age of 25 had obtained a position at Australia University as a professor of Ancient Greek. During WWII he served in the British army, advancing from private to Brigadier. By most accounts of his peers Powell was a brilliant scholar, as well as possessing a high level of integrity. In 1950 he was elected to Parliament in Westminister as a Conservative. In Parliament Powell served as Minister of Health from 1960-1963. A bid for party leadership in 1965 failed. Until 1968 Enoch Powell was very much an establishment politician, albeit with a "march to his own drummer" style. His membership in the British political establishment was about to be recinded!

Post WWII Britain had experienced unprecedented immigration from the lands of it's former empire, especially from the West Indies, India, Pakistan, and Africa. Few of these new arrivals were ethnic Briain's. They comprised mostly black and brown skinned individuals with little, if any, attachment to British traditions, or values. Concurrently large numbers of native Britain's were leaving the Island nation to live in other parts of the world. Powell looked at this development and surmised on what the consequence(s) would be. Deciding to voice his concerns, on April 20, 1968 Enoch Powell made the now famous 'Rivers of Blood' speech at a riding association meeting.

Worried by the repercussions of unchecked immigration Powell warned in his discourse that the newcomers would possess no loyalty to the nation and ultimately not assimilate into British society. He predicted the immigrants would concentrate in sections of the country, form their own institutions and shut native Britain's out of their own communities. Furthermore because British politicians had allowed the invasion to occur they would have to support the newcomers interests at the expense of native Britain's. To do otherwise would risk their credibility. Finally the migration would not cease, as once allowed any backtracking would have severe political consequences for the political elite. As a result of these trends Powell predicted whole sections of Britain where native Britain's would be a minority, as well as being second class citizens in their own land.

To thwart this malignant outcome Enoch Powell advocated for the immediate cessation of immigration from the former empire to Britain, unless they were ethnic Britain's. He also wanted all non-ethnic Britains who had immigrated from the former colonies to the United Kingdom to emigrate back to their former homelands.

Throughout the speech the former professor used rhetoric alluding to the classical world. His most famous remark would give the address it's title;"As I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding. Like the Roman I seem to see" The Tiber River foaming with much blood." Thus the "Rivers of Blood" title.

By today's standards Enoch Powells speech was certainly racist. Nevertheless Powell's concern was for the preservation of the British people and their way of life. He was as adamently opposed to the European Union as he was to Third World immigration. Powells judgement was that Post Imperial Britain, devoid of empire, was highly vulnerable to social disintegration. In this state he believed opening the border to a massive influx of immigrants, be they brown, black, or European (save Ethnic Britains), to be extremely foolhardy.

Reaction to the speech was drastic, and diverse. Amongst the general population pollsters recorded agreement for the rebellious politician to be as high as 82%! Rallies of support for Powell's proposed measures were held throughout the Island and Northern Ireland. The British political establishment, on the other hand, closed ranks to shut the renegade down. Both Labour and Conservative Party leadership agreed to shut Powell out of the political mainstream. He was removed from the shadow cabinet. As much as possible his voice was miminized. In relegating Enoch Powell into political obscurity the British political establishment succeeded completely.

Flash forward to the present. According to the 2021 national census white native Britain's are now a minority in London, the nations capital. "No go zones," where not even the British police are welcomed, exist in contemporary Manchester, and Birmingham. There have been documented episodes of the government of Great Britain removing military veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Disorder out of public shelter so those spaces could be occupied by immigrants. In the vast majority of occasions this results in sentancing the veterans to homelessness. Over the past year (2026) British police, once known as the most competent law enforcement body on the globe, mainly due to to their common sense no nosense approach to their vocation, descended into a nonsensical "Battle of the Flags" tussle with native Britains. Citizens in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, began to raise the flag of their particular nation in town centres or other public institutions. Somehow this was seen by the political and legal elite in the United Kingdom as being racist against non ethnic Brits and therefore a criminal act. Each attempt to raise a flag in the community was resisted by the Bobbies, resulting in large scale tussles between the police and citizenry. It never appeared to occur to the police that with each struggle they were undermining their own legitimacy.

Enoch Powell died on February 8, 1998. Whether he was a racist or just a proud Britain attempting to protect his heritage, can be debated till the cows come home. What cannot be debated however is that his disturbing 1968 predictions of the future have been realized. Ethnic Britains are now second class citizens in their own country! Contemporary Britain is a jurisdiction in decline, with mass migration rendering it's politics assunder. If anyone were to look at Nigel Farage and wonder why he holds so much appeal for the average voter, despite the criticisms of the man by his detractors, the answer is obvious. His supporters remember Enoch Powell.
